Hickory Grove, Pastens Grove, Tiffin, Iowa City, and Muscatine are among the Iowa towns mentioned in the diary. Gage appears to be involved in settling the affairs of Anson Cowles after his death. The diary does not offer information regarding the identity of Mr. Cowles.
